Hungrrr vs Flipdish: Which Restaurant Ordering Platform Is Better?

Hungrrr vs Flipdish at a glance

Hungrrr and Flipdish both let restaurants take orders directly, so they stop paying Just Eat or Deliveroo commission on those orders. That's about where the overlap ends.

Hungrrr is a UK ordering platform that gives independents a branded website and app. If that's all you need, it does the job. Flipdish does that too, and adds a POS, a kitchen display, kiosks, AI phone ordering, AI marketing and payments, all running off the same menu and the same dashboard. For most restaurants that want anything more than a branded ordering page, Flipdish is the better pick.

What is Hungrrr?

Hungrrr is a white-label online ordering platform based in the UK. Restaurants and takeaways use it to put up their own branded website and mobile app, so customers can order without going through a marketplace. It's aimed at independent restaurants and small chains.

The basics are covered: menu management, order notifications, delivery zones and payment collection. A chip shop or curry house that wants its own ordering page instead of relying on a Just Eat listing can get that from Hungrrr.

What it doesn't have is everything around the ordering page. There's no POS, no kiosks, no AI features, and the tools for running several sites are thin.

What is Flipdish?

Flipdish is restaurant technology that covers ordering, the counter and the kitchen:

Flipdish works with restaurants in the UK, Ireland and further afield, from single-site independents to growing groups and franchise operators.

Online ordering

Hungrrr's main product is a white-label ordering website and app. You upload your menu, set your delivery zones and take payments through the platform. Every order that comes through it is an order you're not paying marketplace commission on.

Flipdish's online ordering looks much the same from the customer's side. The difference is what happens after the order is placed. Orders from the website, the app and the kiosk land in one queue next to table orders. Change a price or pull an item in the Flipdish dashboard and it changes on every channel. No second login, no copying the change across by hand.

That sounds minor until a Friday night when the kitchen runs out of something. With separate systems, somebody has to remember to mark it unavailable on the website, on the app and on the till, usually while the tickets are piling up. Miss one and you're ringing a customer to tell them half their order can't be made. With one menu, it's one change.

It also means one screen on the counter. Plenty of takeaways running a busy lunch and an evening delivery service end up with a tablet for each platform, each one beeping, each one needing someone to accept the order and type it into the till. That's the bit Flipdish removes.

POS and in-venue operations

Hungrrr doesn't have a POS. If you use Hungrrr, you need a separate POS for walk-ins and table service. That's two systems, two sets of reports, two things to train new staff on, and two menus that have to match. Keeping them matching is somebody's job, and it's an easy job to forget.

Flipdish's restaurant POS puts every order type in one place. Dine-in, collection and delivery share the same queue, the same kitchen display and the same reporting. Staff look at one screen, not two.

Reporting is where this shows up at the end of the week. If online orders sit in Hungrrr and counter sales sit in another POS, working out what you actually sold on Saturday means pulling two exports and adding them together. Which dishes sell better online than at the counter? Is delivery growing, or is it just taking customers who used to walk in? You can answer those questions with two systems, but it takes a spreadsheet and an evening. On Flipdish it's one report.

For a takeaway that does a lot of walk-in trade alongside delivery, running one system instead of two cuts out a fair amount of admin.

Kiosks

Hungrrr doesn't have a kiosk product.

Flipdish sells self-service kiosks built for QSRs, fast food and other high-traffic venues. Customers order and pay on the screen, which takes pressure off the counter and means staff aren't stuck taking orders when they could be making food.

Kiosk orders also come in bigger than counter orders. People browsing a screen take their time and add things - a side, a drink, a bigger size - that they wouldn't think to ask for with a queue behind them. Nobody at the counter has to remember to upsell, because the screen does it every time.

Kiosk orders go into the same queue and the same kitchen display as everything else, and they use the same menu. Take a burger off and it's gone from the kiosk too.

For a pizza place or burger chain with steady footfall, kiosks are one of the easier technology spends to justify. With Hungrrr, they're not an option at all.

AI tools

Hungrrr has no AI features.

Flipdish has an AI platform for restaurants with two tools that bring in money directly.

The AI Phone Agent answers incoming calls, takes orders and deals with the routine questions, without anyone on staff picking up. At 7pm on a Saturday the phone keeps ringing while everyone is busy, and a call nobody answers is an order that probably goes to the place down the road. The AI Phone Agent takes those orders instead.

AI Marketing looks at order history and customer behaviour and sends targeted offers. Someone who orders every Friday and has skipped the last two weeks gets a message aimed at them, not the same discount that went to the whole list. Fewer people unsubscribe, and more of the people who get the message actually order.

This works partly because Flipdish has all the order data in one place. A setup where online orders live in one system and counter sales live in another only ever sees half of what each customer does.

Multi-site and franchise operations

Hungrrr can handle more than one location, but it wasn't built for groups. Once you're running several sites, the tools start to feel limited.

Flipdish is set up for multi-location and franchise businesses. One central dashboard controls menus, promotions and settings for every site. Franchise operators can lock down brand standards and still let each location set its own hours, local specials and pricing.

Take a price change across eight sites. On Flipdish, head office makes it once and it goes out everywhere. On a platform with weak multi-site tools, it's eight logins, or eight phone calls to eight managers, and a week later you find out one site never did it. Same with a new promotion, a seasonal menu or a change to opening hours over Christmas.

That overhead grows with every site you add, and it shouldn't. When a group goes from five sites to fifteen, the admin shouldn't triple.

Pricing

Both platforms charge a monthly fee instead of commission per order. Neither publishes a full price list.

That means comparing the two monthly fees on their own doesn't tell you much. With Hungrrr, if you need a POS and payment processing for in-venue sales, those come from other suppliers, each with its own contract and its own fee. Kiosks would be another supplier again.

Flipdish bundles them. If you need all of those pieces, one Flipdish package is likely to cost less than building the same setup from three or four suppliers. It's also one number to call when something breaks, instead of three companies each telling you it's the other one's problem.

Get quotes from both and add up everything you'd actually need, not just the ordering fee.

Which platform suits which restaurant?

Hungrrr makes sense for an independent restaurant or small takeaway that:

  • wants a basic direct ordering channel alongside its marketplace listings
  • is happy with its current POS
  • has no plans for kiosks
  • runs one site

Flipdish fits:

  • restaurants that want online ordering, POS and payments in one system
  • multi-location groups that need to manage everything centrally
  • franchise operators keeping brand standards the same across sites
  • venues where kiosks or AI phone ordering would bring in more orders
  • businesses that expect to grow and don't want to keep bolting on separate tools

Why Flipdish is the better long-term choice

Hungrrr solves one problem. It helps restaurants avoid marketplace commission, and that's a problem worth solving.

Flipdish solves the same problem and keeps going. With online ordering, a restaurant POS, kiosks and AI tools on one platform, a restaurant can go from one site to ten without changing systems. On Hungrrr, you'd be adding another supplier at almost every step: a POS first, then kiosks from somewhere else, then something to handle the phones, then better tools once the second and third sites open.

Switching platforms later is a pain. New menus to build, staff to retrain, regulars to move onto a new app. If you're already thinking past where the business is today, Flipdish is the one you won't have to replace.
